Book of Condolence

Thank you to everyone who signed the online Book of Condolence. Your comments, tributes and messages of support have been passed on to the families of the victims.

“I crossed the path of David and Joe multiple times since I started to date James and they were lovely men. David was always up for a laugh with Joe and James at the Blagrave when I was visiting Reading.

I had more opportunities to spend time with Joe as he was James’ best friend in Reading. He was always warm and welcoming. He was a great story tellers and his stories were always exhilarating. If you wanted fun and chill around one or more drinks, Joe was the person to go to. Life did not do him any favor, but he kept being a great entertainer and savoring any moment that life brought to him.

I present my sincere condolence to the families, the friends and the colleagues who shared the life of these two lovely individual. You will be missed but surely not forgotten.

I met David and Joe through James. James was a wonderful thoughtful caring partner and our time together filled me with joy and fantastic memories. He was living only to please people and to make them better. James not only brought joy to everyone who crossed his path but he also fought against all sort of dogma. He taught his students how to become independent thinkers and tolerant and respectful citizens. James was the living example of what the goal of education should be. He will not be forgotten and we will make sure his legacy will last for a very long time.
James, every one loved you and I am very proud to have shared the life of such an extraordinary person. You will be missed by your family, your friends, your colleagues, your students and, of course, by me.
Love you loads
XxXxXx”

“We were lucky enough to welcome Joe into our family when he married Ian 14 years ago. Joe lit up the world wherever he went, he was a breath of fresh air and he had a fantastic sense of humour! He was a loyal, kind and caring person and we were privileged and proud to be part of his life.
Words cannot describe how much we will miss Joe. Our lives will not be the same without him.
Sending all our love to James’s and David’s family and friends. R.I.P. Joe, James and David, tragically taken but never forgotten. Xxx”

“Mr James Furlong was an amazing teacher. He made lessons so fun. They are definitely my highlight of my school years. He was calm and collected and would help his students and fellow staff members when needed. He was outgoing, caring, thoughtful and one of a kind. He will be remembered for being and exceptional staff member, teacher and family member.”

“I was fortunate enough to know Joe for almost 20 years, across 3 countries. He was an incredibly special person, who could make you laugh until you cried and was the life of the party. The only comfort is knowing he is with his beloved Ian. Raising a Bacardi and Diet Coke always.
To all three men, it is a senseless reason you are gone, but you will always be remembered. Love to your families and friends and the community you were such an important part of.

“I met Joe through his husband, Ian. Every time that I saw them out in town, they were always so happy. When Ian passed away, I still saw Joe in town on the odd occasion, and he would always stop, have time for a chat and hug. He was such a happy, charming man, and to be taken in this way is so cruel and heartbreaking. My deepest sympathies to all the families involved. RIP Joe, James & David x”

Emma Dobson

“Well, what can I say about the amazing man who was Mr Furlong. He taught me history during my sixth form years at The Holt School. He is the reason I went to university and studied history. Without him, I would not have got into university to study the subject I am truly passionate about. He never let me give up, even when I had given up on myself. I was really struggling to get decent grades on my history A Level work, and other teachers were unable to find the time to support me. However, Mr Furlong believed that I could, and would, improve and he was completely open and honest about my work, and was more than happy to dedicate his free time to support me. I am honoured to have been taught by him. He will never be forgotten. I am heartbroken and devastated by the loss of such a wonderful person, he had the kindest heart. I will never forget just how much he inspired me. I would not be where I am today…or currently walking the amazing path I am on…without him. He was a fantastic, brilliant, teacher and I know he will be missed.”

Personally devastating to those to whom they were in any way close, but we are all lessened by their absence, and what they have and would have contributed to the benefit of others. Unimaginable what their last moments must have been like. With grateful thanks for their contributions to their communities, personal and professional, and profound sadness that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“Dear James, Joe and David

Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away to the next room.
I am I and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other,
That, we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way
which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effect.
Without the trace of a shadow on it.

Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same that it ever was.
There is absolute unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?

I am but waiting for you.
For an interval.
Somewhere. Very near.
Just around the corner.

All is well.

Nothing is past; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before only better, infinitely happier and forever we will all be one together with Christ.

Henry Scott Holland”

My heart goes out to James’s family, friends and students and also to the loved ones of David Wails and Joe Ritchie-Bennett.

“To the families and friends of James, Joe and David, I did not know any of them but I’m so sorry for your loss.

They sound like such lovely men who were making a positive contribution to the community and society.

May their legacy live on and be a force for good in our lovely, diverse and peaceful town. Rest in Peace James, Joe and David.”

“In memory of James, Joe and David – three amazing men who individually and collectively gave so much to others, especially in the fields of history and the sciences. My daughters will never forget the ohenomenal impact James Furlong made to their lives.

Your names will live on, both in the hearts of your friends and family – and also in the townsfolk of Reading who mourn at your senseless murders.

Rest in peace.”

“Rest in peace those who lost their lives in such a despicable way. My thoughts are with all their families and friends. I love Reading for its diversity of people and believe that together we will get through these difficult times.

Peace & Love.”

“I know so many colleagues from TVP impacted by Saturdays tragic events but my sincere condolences go to the friends and family of the three victims tragically killed. May they all rest easy. RIP.”
